Last year, Ty Burrell returned to his alma mater to deliver a funny, self-deprecating, and thoughtful commencement speech to our graduating class. Talking about his choice of “the least rational career possible,” Ty offered relevant advice and thanked his alma mater for demanding that he give his best— always. Ty has appeared in blockbuster hits such as The Incredible Hulk, National Treasure II: Book of Secrets, and Black Hawk Down. He has also starred on Broadway and in several TV series.
In a recent interview, Ty credited SOU with his development as an actor. We can think of no greater endorsement of our university than that simple statement. As a scholarship recipient, Ty was able to focus his time and energy on developing his craft, rather than frantically scheduling auditions and rehearsals around his work schedule. Through the generosity of donors, Ty was able to pursue his dreams. The Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bartell Award made this possible.
We are proud to call Ty an alum, and we will continue to applaud him as his career continues to flourish.
