For many graduates, serving the community is not something they do once a year or on weekends—it is simply how they live their lives. In finding the resources for others to achieve their dreams, our graduates seem to be living theirs. Brenda Johnson is certainly an example of this work ethic. Through her dedication to her profession and her desire that everyone be treated as equals, she has transformed the way Jackson Country residents receive health care. Described as saintly, smart, funny, principled, passionate, and proud, Brenda Ober Johnson graduated from Southern Oregon University in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. At the same time, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) at SOU.
To achieve all of this and to keep her grades up, Brenda had to work full-time. She was concerned that her work schedule was going to prevent her from being able to focus on her homework. Fortunately, her dedication was recognized by the nursing faculty, and they awarded her the Warren and Emily Bishop Scholarship. This gave Brenda the support she needed to finish her program and succeed.
Today, Brenda is executive director of La Clinica del Valle, a healthcare service geared toward low-income residents of Jackson County. She has had a profound impact on the community through her dedicated and dynamic leadership. Brenda embodies the best of Southern Oregon University’s alumni.
